Delta Denta's new Maximum Plan Allowance policy is generating a lot of concern and questions. The policy prohibits participating dentists from billing patients for any amount in excess of the Maximum PLan Allowance established by Delta Dental for certain procedures. An Oakland County man has been stopped from illegally practicing dentistry, following a lawsuit filed by the Michigan Dental Association. Oakland County Circuit Judge Daniel O’Brien issued a preliminary injunction Oct. 1 against Everett VanDenEeden, doing business as Smile-Rite Denture Center. Under the court order, VanDenEeden is refrained from providing any consultation, treatment, or diagnosis of any dental disease or other conditions. VanDenEeden must also stop all advertising to the general public and cancel all telephone numbers associated with advertising his services. Further, he must inform the court of any patient cases in progress so that the patient can be directed to a licensed dentist for treatment.

Legislation that would enable the new Community Dental Health Coordinator position to practice in Michigan has been referred to the Senate Committee on Family and Children’s Services. The committee is chaired by Sen. Mark Jansen (R-Grand Rapids). The bill was introduced in June by Sen. Jerry VanWoerkom (R-Norton Shores).
